Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao – the idea of one man who will change a broken society for the better has been gambled with before and it never worked.
The left and the right alike fall for such fallacies because humans are emotional, desperate creatures particularly in times of crisis.
The fact that people have not learnt this lesson in 2025 is baffling.
The modern day cultists follow men (does always seem to be men but it can be women too – Thatcher was one) such as Trump, Sanders, Farage and Corbyn.
Trump is the most overt and dangerous example; the man has lied, cheated, been generally unpleasant yet demands so much core support that he can win two elections he otherwise had no right to win.
It is entirely likely he will always have core support until the day he dies regardless of what he does, such is the level of cultism.
It is a bizarre occurrence to happen in the land of freedom and democracy, designed to avoid such men but we live in bizarre times.
In the UK, which I prefer to focus on, I’d argue Farage is our Trump. He doesn’t have the same level of support but the parallels are similar.
There is a core group that will always vote for Farage’s ideals/party and believe the entire political class and mainstream media are out to get him. The ideals being anti immigration, anti liberal, anti establishment and nationalist.
The far right across the world fall for strongmen – Modi, Trump, Farage, it’s always the same.
However, the left fall for it too. Obviously, we can point to communist regimes. Stalin, Mao, Castro etc. all convinced their people of their unique abilities and in almost every case it was a lie.
In 2025, Corbyn and Sanders have cult followings. I am not comparing them to Stalin and Mao of course but the point is the same; the idea of one man to liberate the country from the capitalists.
They are 76 and 83 respectively. Practically speaking, basing your left wing movement around them is a bad idea. It is also why we should not fear Trumpism long term. Bluntly, they will all die soon.
Individuals will always let you down; there is not one human alive who has the same politics as you do on every issue. Moreover, convincing yourself that one man has all the answer is ridiculous because when they come out with something horrifying, you end up rationalising it.
Left or right wing, prioritise goals over individuals.
