According to Press Gazette, 3 companies – DMG Media, News UK and Reach control 90% of UK newspapers.

Some of the most read media in the UK is all billionaire and corporate owned.

The Sun is owned by News UK, a subsidiary of News Corp which in turn is controlled by Rupert Murdoch and currently chaired by his son, Lachlan Murdoch.

Murdoch also owns the Times and Sunday Times. Murdoch’s UK tabloid News of the World was implicated in hacking voicemails of celebrities, politicians, and crime victims. The scandal led to its closure.

The Mail Online is owned by Jonathan Harmsworth – 4th Viscount Rothermere and inheritor of the paper.

The Mail has a history of supporting Adolf Hitler. The same family who owned them then, owns them now.

Sir Paul Roderick Clucas Marshall owns GB News and the Spectator. The latter literally had Boris Johnson as a one time editor.

Even the ones people suspect are more trustworthy are bought and paid for. The Independent is part owned by the Saudi state; the same country that is bombing Yemen, funding terrorism and owns Newcastle United.

Independent media not owned or funded by states or billionaires are necessary, therefore. We do have some which exists in the UK but they tend to be partisan (which isn’t an issue if you are OK and cognisant of that).

The BBC, in theory, is the answer but unfortunately it isn’t. Question Time over-platforms right wing voices. As recently as 2023 they had Richard Sharp as it’s chair. Sharp gave 800k to the Tory party.

Social media is awash with misinformation and also billionaire owned.

But the crucial difference is anyone can publish on there so it allows people otherwise who would be written off or ignored to have a voice and make a living without the controlling hand of an editor appointed by men like Murdoch.

However, billionaire owners can manipulate algorithms and with Facebook and Instagram getting rid of fact checkers and X being owned by Musk, who is openly partisan, it isn’t the total answer either.

TikTok is the only social media not owned by an American billionaire so has a very different outlook compared to the rest; depending on your politics this is either good or bad. It is notably more sympathetic to Palestine for example.

Almost everything you see and hear is controlled by the ultra rich who have no interest in keeping you well informed or happy, their only goal is to keep their power.

You should care because the billionaire class are manipulating you and we fall for it every time.

The powerful have used many tools throughout history to do this – manipulation and propaganda first and failing that outright violence.

The corporate media is a tool of power to keep power, spread their propaganda and make money.
